Storytelling in Schools

Clare is a trained Drama teacher with Qualified Teaching Status and an experienced workshop leader. She has run storytelling workshops with a broad range of people and worked in schools with ages 4 years to 18years. She has taught GCSE and A level Drama, directed numerous plays and ran a youth theater in Oxford.

Clare runs regular half day Storytelling sessions in schools. In around three hours the whole school can experience a little story magic. An example of a typical morning in a Primary school might be;
Reception - 20mins
Years 1 and 2 - 20mins
Year 3 - 30mins
Year 4 and 5 - 40mins
Year 6 - 60mins

Stories can be tailored to specific topics eg Greek myths for Key Stage 2 or a specific historical study. Clare has rich wealth of legend and folklore from Devon, Somerset and the British Isles which can feed into history topics.

Clare is often asked to run longer days in schools. An introduction to Storytelling workshop can follow a storytelling performance. Students love to find their own creative ways into a story and Clare has plenty of techniques to help them. It a wonderful thing to work with a group of students for a day and witness their growing confidence and immense sense of achievement when they finally tell their own story. Clare is a sensitive and confident teacher who believes in positive affirmation. She creates a supportive and creative atmosphere where students can and do blossom.

With an awareness of Curriculum requirements, Clare will encourage students to discuss and evaluate each others work in positive and constructive ways. Drama techniques such as hot seating, flashback, mime, freeze frames and teacher- in -role can be uses in longer workshops.

Storytelling is a wonderful way of complimenting and enhancing History, English and even Geography national curriculum requirements. Speaking, Listening, Group discussion and Drama can all become a part of a storytelling session.

Clare has an up to date CRB check.
